Whether scoring for a live ensemble or creating a DAW-based or hybrid score, I am delving into textures both instrumental and harmonic. As a child I wore out many records, listening to everything from rock to funk to jazz to classical. (Ravel’s treatment of Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at An Exhibition” was in high rotation). This regular exposure imprinted upon my nascent creativity, and this conditioning has served me well throughout my thirty plus years as a professional in the music industry.
The son of a trombonist, composer and conductor father and a mother who was a professional singer (they did many CBC Radio gigs, touring with Canada’s best big bands during WWII), I was born in Edmundston, New Brunswick, Canada and shortly thereafter, moved to Toronto.
At an early age I knew music was to be my life. Throughout my studies on the trombone at Humber College in Toronto, performance was my primary interest. During the 1980's, my development and experience as a composer and arranger accelerated. When midi and sequencing technologies emerged in the mid ‘eighties, I saw the potential to explore more and more musical textures.
My wife Karen and I live in Toronto and have a son, Daniel, who is currently attending the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.
In 1990 I refocused my career with the sole intention of composing to picture, eventually being taken under the wings of the great people at Keen Music (now called Toast + Jam). My abilities caught the attention of several other composers and my entry into episodic television came via ghost-writing for some of Canada’s busiest composers. My first solo series, Nelvana’s “Moville Mysteries”, was a plum opportunity. The score could be considered “anti-cartoon”, consisting of many brooding, darker textures and some intense, abstract atonality at times.
